A Minor Moan

Miners are vocal about their respective plights. Many complain that they’ve been the victims of high-sec gank squads or suicide solo macro-hunters, but they appear to be oblivious to the nature of New Eden.

There are no zones in New Eden whilst within the very-vast-viciously-void-vacuum, that are devoid of danger and therefore, if you assume that you can mine unmolested for hours at a time whilst amassing vast sums of minerals then you will be sorely disappointed.

Common sense is to have an escort with you whilst you mine. Prudent pilots may join a mining Corporation which allows (relative) safety in numbers. You could mine in vessels which are not attractive to opportunists, and whilst I appreciate that they may not rip ores as rapidly as specialist ships, they will be overlooked by the majority of ‘prats.’ The fact is that you will need to protect yourselves in order to gain in any profession.

Scum and villainy will attack you for your possessions no matter who or where you are so minimising the value and/or the risk of loss is a wise precaution. Those of you enjoying the protection of local law enforcement agents cannot be completely immune from those of us whom will risk the loss of our possessions to gain yours so heed the warnings, learn from your losses and don’t assume that because you are innocently minding your own business that the dark side will ignore you.

Happy mining…

Even better is to maintain your situational awareness. By the time 10xGank Dessies arrive in your belt, there is nothing for a miner to do. INstead it is far better to know what is going on in Local and what is inbound by pinging DS. You can do neither unfortunately while AFK and that appears to be the point of the current ganking madness.

Excellent point my friend. It highlights the crux of the problem that, although mining is incredibly boring (it is, I'm sorry) undevided attention needs to be granted to the ship to prevent such an untimely demise.

Without a guardian at the helm, any ship is vulnerable to attack. If you lose attention, you will lose your ship.

Note that having a 'guard' is what puts mining at one of the LEAST profitable 'carebear' professions. Solo missioners and miners make roughly the same isk / hour; but a missioner doesn't need a guard. The guard will want to be paid, and they COULD be running missions for 100%(or more) of the miners take... hence why there are no 'guards' in hi-sec.

Now, a miner could be alert, align, equip properly, and this should be done. But the idea of a hi-sec miner having a 'guard' isn't going to happen... the guard wants to make isk too, and he can make just as much (or more) than a maxed out hulk doing lvl 4s solo.

Easy to solve in high sec, get a disposable alt (you are allowed 3 characters per account), attack someone in a belt (a friend), Concord turns up to do their business, and then stays around in system until downtime, or until they get called away to another Concordoken in system. Unpaid guards.

The above tactic is considered an exploit, but its kinda hard to prove...its better if you use a corpmate and not an alt, as this way it can't be directly linked to the mining character

Orrrrr...use your on-board directional scanner. Set your range to be able to tell if anyone is moving in on you, and if it appears to be so GTFO. Just sayin.....

Using a corpmate to summon CONCORD to a belt would only work if you're in an NPC corp, and if you're calling on help from those corpmates, you might also be giving away your position to the very people you want to evade.
