Vorsprung Durch Technik

The EvE fitting Tool is the standard by which the majority design prospective ships. In conjunction with Singularity EFT is a very powerful tool. B13 is an EFT warrior, his past something of an engineer. His fits usually look very promising on paper but sometimes fail to deliver in practice. I fear this is quite common and derives from the misconception that EFT can, in theory provide a sound and fool proof set of stats that will translate accurately into New Eden’s’ fray of fighting fools.

EFT is an excellent way of formatting a vessel to do a particular job. Whether it’s scanning, piracy or mission-running, EFT can provide you with the relevant stats to enable such designs. But one must be careful not to put too much emphasis on this tool to provide one with an effective ship. EFT does not take into consideration the practicalities of some designs such as dual-tanking (simultaneous shield & armour tanks). Statistically a dual-tanked vessel can take much more punishment than a specific tank, or an omni-tank(universal damage resistance), but at an immense cost to other abilities and manageable capacitor levels.

Testing is the only way to be sure of your designs performance. Without testing, any design is only speculation, and EFT cannot provide the necessary experience. So put away your blueprints and setsquares and delve into the realm of death and destruction and test that fit to obliteration on Singularity.

Happy testing…

Tackling Adversity

Survival in New Eden is a tale of frustration and cloning. Every-time I un-cloak I suspect the dangers surrounding me, eager to steal everything from me including my precious life. As a clone I am immortal, but the loss of life still bears the pain of death.

If we want to grow as a community we have a responsibility to take care of our fellows. Many disciplines have a code of conduct and piracy is no exception. Attacking fresh pilots from the academy rarely breaks a sweat and therefore harbours little rewards. I abstain from such behaviour; identifying such a young pilot in low sec prompts assistance in the form of advice and in some cases ISK. This happens with alarming regularity and indicates a need for clarification.

A right of passage into low sec is one of experience. Be certain about your fate if you venture into these lawless lands without the necessary preparations as you will surely lose everything. If you’re finding it hard to maintain any sort of healthy existence in Empire you must understand that the riches found in low sec or null sec are only obtainable with the correct tools to survive.

Intelligence
Intel is the most important factor which is vital to survival in low or null sec. A lack of intel will surely turn your final destination into a clone vat bay. For this reason, operations in low sec are best planned and should have a specific role. Research the area you plan to ‘visit’ and check the last known kills in the system as this can usually indicate whether the system harbours a blockade or pirates.

Local
The local beacon contains the most readily available intel. It identifies pilots within the system and also shows their security status or their state. A low security rating should heed a warning, although a high security rating is by no means a guarantee that the pilot is honourable. Dependant on your intent, try to find a system that is devoid of pilots and either dock at the local station or cloak your ship until the local beacon is cleared. This valuable intel should always be open and available on your HUD.

Warp Core Stabiliser
These ridiculous modules prevent the warp-field from becoming disrupted or scrambled. A side effect reduces your ships ability to target effectively. This can also result in the inability to target smaller craft. I would only recommend using WCS (Warp Core Stabilisers) if you intend not to engage in combat.

Cloaking Device
This little item is one of my favourites. Generally most of my ships are designed for covert operations but occasionally I will risk the drop in combat effectiveness for the added security a cloak can offer. Similar to the WCS they reduce the ability of the ship to target as well as reduce the speed of the craft significantly. Use wisely and ensure that you are not within 2500km from any floating body including gases as they will disrupt the visual distortion field and disable the cloak.

Corporations
If you’re not yet enrolled within a corporation beyond the academy it is advised to make this a priority. Ensure that you research the corporation you intend to apply to as there are organisations that will take advantage of inexperience, tricking them into submitting ISK. An application to a corporation costs nothing and kosher corporations do not require you to submit any ISK except through taxes.

As a new pilot you may find it difficult to apply successfully to some of the bigger corporations but there are groups out there who specialise in training young pilots. A good place to start is the Recruitment Forums or the Recruitment Channel(in-game).

Enrolling within a corporation is by no means mandatory but it does present you with more options. New Eden is best enjoyed in tandem with other pilots and corporation enrollment provides additional man-power and security for your excursions.

Awareness
This is a skill that cannot be taught but which becomes increasingly natural the more time spent in your POD. Combining experience and intel, awareness is the ability to judge situations quickly and proceed with the appropriate tactical actions.

Testing
If combat is what you seek you would be well advised to stay out of low sec and enter Singularity. Here all fittings, ammunition, ships, skills and all else has a default price of 100 ISK. Here you can refine your fittings and test them to destruction almost for free. Podding is outlawed on Singularity making for a safer and less frustrating environment for all. There are disadvantages to Singularity but combat is so easily available here that the basics can be self taught through trial and error very quickly.

Fit To Lose
If you’re at the stage where you are ready to enter low sec make sure that whatever you fit on your ship you are prepared to lose. I generally fit items I have appropriated from my prey which helps keep costs to an absolute minimum or I build my own modules from parts and salvage. Don’t fit best named modules and never fit faction equipment, unless you are stinking rich. Stick to Tech 1 items and use the specific abilities of the ship, paying special attention to it’s bonuses.

Experience
There is simply no substitute to experience. Regularly engage in a cheap hull and don’t become disheartened by losses. Train to specialise in your chosen profession and become proficient at the frigate sized vessels before moving up a class. New Eden is a violent and un-forgiving landscape and one which refuses to be tamed. Only experienced pilots dare venture deep into null sec for a reason, it’s very dangerous. Don’t be a fool until you’re ready.

This guide is by no means definitive and is only meant as a rough guide. Use your head and your eyes effectively, and the rest will come naturally. Fly safe...

An Astronomical Oversight

With Dominion, the fidelity of our beloved galaxy is to be completed, finally. Astronomical bodies such as planets and moons are to be lavished upon with great attention and illumination. This marvel can already be observed on Singularity and it’s a sight to behold. Such delight prompts endless snapping of the camera drones aperture while these sights are novel but, although a welcomed improvement in line with our adored space-craft and stations I am unsure whether the powers that be will implement the lushness with the necessary thought to make New Eden consistent.

Our solar system has several types of planets and these are formed and determined by the gravity effects from the central star and each others interactions over billions of years. Planets which nestle comfortably inside the asteroid belt are smaller and are composed mainly of rocks of various elements. These planets usually possess atmospheres and little or no moons as their gravity is too feeble to create such masses. The outer planets tend to be gas giants harbouring many moons within their huge gravitational fields as well as beautiful rings of debris in some rarer cases. The further out one goes from the central star the colder and more inert the planets become until they resemble nothing more than snowballs of unremarkable ore and frozen gas. The light available to such planets is far weaker than the central occupants enjoy making for some very dark objects indeed.

These details are superfluous to the mechanics of New Eden and Singularity is not subject to the same laws as the reality we enjoy, but I hope and trust that CCP look towards the composition of our own heavenly objects for inspiration, as well as the mechanics of solar system creation.

Super Capital Slug-fest

Earlier today the rescheduled Super Carrier patch test was undertaken by the many thousands of lucky pilots able to log onto the test server; Singularity. Every pilot was promoted to maximum skills and encouraged to construct a theoretical Super Carrier for pew pew. The test, designed to maximise interaction and identify any significant in-balances went well clocking up hundreds of wrecks every hour.

Within the violently bizarre realm of Singularity, Super Capitals (Mother Ships) are no longer granted the ability to fit Triage modules, Clone Vat Bays or additional Ware-fare links. Instead a hp boost and a new class of drone; Fighter Bombers have been docked to reclassify the role for the craft into a supporting role. These deadly new Fighter Bombers have one sole purpose; the destruction of an enemy Titan.

Seeing these little drone ships in action on Singularity is quite hypnotic as they launch huge volumes of high explosive missiles at the target resulting in a fireworks display of light and debris. The server has enjoyed a thousand pilots online throughout the day and many have had to queue a few hours until their turn. The changes are significant, some would say controversial; pilots have 'rage quit' in disgust at CCP's decision to amend the Mother-Ships role, an unusual method of contributing to the evolution of our beloved galaxy.

Fortunately my ships are entirely sub-capital so there is little chance of me rage quitting any time soon, so long as they don't nerf podding.

Terra Firma

EvE Online is a beautiful game. Picking through screenshots I am amazed at how subtle the lighting effects have become, the glare, the shadows, even the way the metal hulls reflect on our beloved ships. Stations and stargates are also incredibly detailed and are a marvel to look at. But there is one problem with the recent graphics enhancements. They have neglected to improve the most massive of objects in the game world - the planets.

Before the Trinity upgrade, ships, stations, star gates and planets had the same graphical resolution. Since Trinity almost everything has seen steady improvement, but with every upgrade the planetary bodies look even more out of place against crisply detailed heavenly objects.

Dominion, the next release from CCP due this winter is to address this issue by introducing remapped planetary surfaces complete with clouds, oceans, mountains and atmospheres. It will be a welcome addition and will help solidify the game world into consistency. It would also be nice to see some variation beyond a standard 8 models, so certain planets can be identified from appearance alone.

The upgrade is sure to make EvE Online the best looking MMORPG on the market today. I'm getting my camera drones ready as we speak. If you can't wait until the next expansion you can observe some work-in-progress on Singularity.

Ten Top Tips for New Pirates

To be a successful pirate requires patience, a steady nerve and skill. There are no rules to pirating but there are a few simple things you can do if just starting out as a pirate to help you on your way to success.

1. Combat in EvE Online is all about skills combined with the experience to use those skills effectively. This is much more pronounced if you concentrate on the lowest common denominator first. This means that you must learn to walk before you run. Train for the smaller ships first and train your skills for those ships to at least level 4. Continue to train like this until you can fly a Battle-Cruiser competently.

2. Find a ship you like to fly then specialise for that ship. Train all your skills to level 5 for that ship including the desired weapon skills. This will max out the bonuses given on that ship making you more effective in combat. Also don't forget to train the tertiary skills either as these will help you operate your ship more efficiently. Don't overlook your Engineering skills as these are usually crucial to your ships ability to maintain a healthy capacitor, and capacitor is life.

3. Make sure that you fit the ship with the relevant equipment. Note the bonuses on the ship and fit accordingly taking advantage of any weapon bonuses or shield or armour bonuses. This will greatly increase the effectiveness of your fitting.

4. Practice makes perfect. Arrange for your corporation to engage in combat with you so you can get some experience of what to expect. Obviously try not to get yourself destroyed but fight until one of you is into 10% armour then disengage. Also try to engage in combat which is slightly unfair, don’t always fight 1v1 as chances are in real combat the odds won’t be even.

Another place to test your metal is the test server (Singularity). The test server is anywhere from 1 day to 2 months behind Tranquillity(depending on the mirror of the server) so any new skills you have will not be available here until you train them again. You can still train different skills on the test server and all market items are available at 100 ISK regardless of actual value. This means you can buy skills, equipment, ships and implants for next to nothing and try many different setups in actual combat. Pod killing is forbidden on Singularity so be careful with your smart bombs!

5. Concentrate your attack. Don’t spread your firing across multiple targets as this will weaken your effectiveness in combat. Make sure that you fire on one target only. You can use your electronic warfare on multiple targets, for instance you may want to attack one target while jamming another’s weapons, and this is fine as long as you concentrate your turrets and missiles on one target.
6. Your scanner is your friend. Learn how to use it quickly and efficiently. Keep it open at all times. This also goes for the Local Chat window. Keeping an eye on this can help you avoid any other ships coming to the victims aid.

7. Successful pirates rarely travel alone. Travelling with a wingman can enable you to split your roles so that one can ‘trap’ the target (tackler) and the other can kill and/or tank the target. Doing this makes you both a much more deadly unit as you work together to take down you opponent.

8. Ransom your targets and respect your enemy. If they decline to pay you then feel free to destroy them and their POD. If they pay the ransom then honour your prey and let them go. Don’t smack-talk local or your ‘customer’ and never allow more than 30 seconds paying the ransom as they may trying to dalay you while calling for assistance.

9. Train your learning skills to maximum. You do not need to do this straight away but be advised, the longer you put it off the more time you will have lost overall. It isn’t a lot of fun to train just learning skills immediately but once you have a few ‘fun’ skills, return to these essential skills and max them out. While training them you can always practice your techniques in combat.

10. Above all never under-estimate your enemy. Knowing the limitations of both your ships abilities and your enemies’ will help you a great deal so swat up on the most common ships capabilites (weapons, weaknesses and strengths). Always try to engage your prey on your grounds instead of theirs and always be mindful of your surroundings.
Trust this guide, and your life as a pirate will be more successful and eventful.

Happy hunting.

Singularity

The test server Singularity is open to all players and will login even if your account has been suspended on tranquility, so long as your account was active at the time of the mirror of Tranquility.

Singularities purpose is to try out new features, and as a result it will generally be a few patches ahead of the Tranquility server.

Character information is replicated to the Singularity servers on a regular basis, but keep in mind that if your account got created after the last replication, you will not be able to access the server.
Gameplay mechanics and playing environments may be quite different from what you're used to on Tranquility. Here, the world is constantly changing.

Please note that GM support is not available on the test server nor with problems you may encounter accessing it. Enter at your own risk!

To gain access to the test servers, follow these instructions:

Windows

  • Create a separate folder for your test client ( i.e "C:\evetest").
  • Copy everything from your original EVE folder (by default locate at "C:\Program. Files\CCP" ) to the new ("C:\evetest"). This step is important, since patching the test client will render it incompatible with the Tranquility server.
  • Go to this webpage to download patches for Singularity.
  • Download the "Download TQ to Singularity Patch" or the Multiplicity one if you are going to test on that server.
  • Apply the patch to the correct EVE installation such as "C:\evetest". You will be promted to point to the appropriate installation folder.
  • Create a shortcut for the new eve.exe file inside C:\evetest.
  • Right click on the shortcut and select properties, then select the Shortcut tab.
  • add  /server:Singularity for Singularity and press OK. Note: This includes entering the 'space' before the '/'
The final look of the Target line would look something like this ( Different between client locations).
    "C:\evetest\eve.exe" /server:87.237.38.50.
  • Then double click on the shortcut and log in.
Machintosh

  • Download the Tranquility client: http://www.eve-online.com/download/(If you have already installed the EVE Client, skip to step 3).
  • Install the Tranquility client.
  • Rename your install to "EVE Online TQ" or something of your choice.
  • Install another copy of EVE Online, download the client here http://www.eve-online.com/download/
  • Rename that to "EVE Online Singularity" or something of your choice.
  • Go here: http://www.eve-online.com/patches/patches.asp?s=singularity.
  • Download the latest Tranquility to Singularity patch.
  • Execute it and point it to the install called "EVE Online Singularity."
  • Note that the client you just patch changed name to "EVE Online" again. So, rename it to "EVE Online Singularity" again.
  • Run the client.
Linux

  • Install the EVE client using the Cedega installer ( if you've done this already you can of course skip this step).
  • Open up a termninal and do cp -R ~/.cedega ~/.cedegaSISI
  • Edit the following file using your favorite editor ( nano, pico or vi ) ~/.cedegaSISI/EVE\ Online/config
    "Path" = "/home/[your username]/.cedega/EVE Online/c_drive"

    change it to to this:
    "Path" = "/home/[your username]/.cedegaSISI/EVE Online/c_drive"
  • Edit ~/.cedegaSISI/.updater/cedegaUpdateChecker
    if [ -e ${HOME}/.cedega/.cedegarc ]; then
    change it to this:
    if [ -e ${HOME}/.cedegaSISI/.cedegarc ]; then
then change the line in the same file
    export CEDEGA_PATH=${HOME}/.cedega
    change it to this:
    export CEDEGA_PATH=${HOME}/.cedegaSISI
  • Edit ~/.cedegaSISI/.EveOnline-linux/manifest
add .testing to the end of the file so it'll look like this
    http://updates.cedega.com/manifest/eveonline/EveOnline-linux.manifest.testing
  • Create a game launcher for SiSi
    • Right click on your desktop -> create launcher and set as following
      type : Application
      name: Eve SISI client
      command : /home/[your username]/.cedegaSISI/.updater/cedegaUpdateChecker -GAME EveOnline-linux
      comment:
    • Then the game config launcher ( eve -config )
    • Right click on your desktop -> create launcher
      type : Application
      name: Eve SISI config
      command : /home/[username]/.cedegaSISI/.updater/cedegaUpdateChecker -GAME EveOnline-linux -config
      comment:
  • Go to this webpage to download patches for Singularity.
  • Install the test patches
    • Install the patch by starting the new eve sisi config launcher.
    • There click on the "install game patch" button select the patch.
    • navigate to c:/program files/ccp/eve and install the patch.
  • Go to /home/[username]/.cedega/EVE Online/
    • edit games.ini
    • Locate the line "commandlineargs="
    • Add this to the end: /server:87.237.38.50
    • It should now look like this: "commandlineargs=/server:87.237.38.50"
    • Save and close the file.
To start the game double click on the EVE SISI Client launcher you created.
If you receive the following error "There was an unexpected error while retrieving patch status. The patchsystem was not able to locate a patch file for the current version. Please try again." you will need to download the proper patch found here.
  • When you install the patch, make sure you update the new client ("c:\evetest"), not the original you use to play on Tranquility.
After the patch is installed you should be able to log on to the test server.
Please take the time to bug report as much as you can. Your feedback is also very important for what features are developed or changed, so don't hesitate to post your thoughts on the Game Development Forum.
Please read the test server rules before logging in. They may be found here.
Useful general information is available here.
